Novel Anion Exchangers for Electrodes with Improved Selectivity to Divalent Anions

Abstract: It has been found that replacing of several long-chain alkyl substituents at the nitrogen atom of lipophilic quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) by methyls results in a dramatic increase of the potentiometric selectivity of ion-selective electrodes (ISE) with QAS-based plasticized PVC membranes to some divalent anions against the monovalent ones. The discussed effect of QAS cation nature on the potentiometric selectivity is also partly retained for ISE with neutral carrier-based membranes doped with QAS to provide… Show more

“…Higher quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) proved themselves as promising materials for making anion selective ISEs [11][12][13]. One of their characteristic features has been believed to be their low extraction capacity toward hydrophilic double charged anions (sulfate, selenate, selenite, carbonate etc.)…”

“…The lipophilic quaternary amines were used in the membrane electrodes. [31][32][33] The quaternary amines function as dissociated ion exchangers, equilibrium anion extraction into membranes is exclusively based on the difference between the free energy of solvation for an anion in the aqueous solution and organic membrane. Polymeric membrane electrodes prepared with quaternary amines exhibited potentiometric anion selectivity patterns in accordance with the Hofmeister series, e.g., ClO 4…”
