Novel and processable polyimides with a N-benzonitrile side chain: thermal, mechanical and gas separation properties

Abstract: A series of organo-soluble and thermally stable polyimides with N-benzonitrile side group were synthesized from a new diamine monomer, 3-(bis(4-aminophenyl)amino)benzonitrile with different aromatic dianhydrides via thermal or chemical imidization.

“…However, the trade-off between gas permeability and selectivity exists as an objective for the study of membranes [18]. Many efforts have been done to enhance the permeability and selectivity of polymeric membranes [19], [20], [21], [22], [23], [24], [25], [26]. One method is to fabricate mixed matrix membranes or nanocomposite (NC) membranes.…”

“…17 It should be noted that good solubility in low-boiling-point solvents is critical for preparing films or coatings at a relatively low processing temperature, which is desirable for advanced microelectronics manufacturing applications. To increase the solubility, bulky groups, flexible linkages or non-coplanar structures are introduced along the polymer chains.…”

“…It is generally known that aromatic ether linkages introduced along the chains of the polymers provide a lower energy of internal rotation. 17,30 Among all the polymers, PEIc has good solubility in less polar solvents, such as chloroform and tetrahydrofuran, on heating due to the presence of different flexible ether chain in both diamine and dianhydride monomers. The solubility of the synthesized polymers is summarized in Table 3.…”

“…More and more researchers have focused on synthesizing new diamine monomers and dianhydride acid monomers because fluorinated monomers cause the polyimide to have a low strength and the performance of the polyimide composites were limited to its compatibility. The side groups, hyperbranched structures, and new diamine monomers containing semifluorinated groups, isopropyl, phenyl phosphyl, and organosilicone have resulted in a large free volume and a decreased dielectric constant. However, monomers have been key in preparing low‐dielectric‐constant polyimides, whereas the previous studies reported dielectric constants from 2 to 3 because the asymmetric structures enhanced the molecular polarity and the monomers were not easily obtained; this limits their applications.…”
