Novel and highly sensitive immunoassay for total hepatitis B surface antigen, including that complexed with hepatitis B surface antibody

Abstract: The new iTACT-HBsAg assay appears to detect total HBsAg with high sensitivity, even in the presence of HBsAb, and may useful in identifying subclinical or occult HBV carriers.

“…In that situation, some people with OBI may become HBsAg positive if tested using assays that can dissociate HBsAg from immune complexes that bind HBsAg to anti-HBs. 51 The lower limit of detection of most currently available commercial HBV DNA assays is 10-20 IU/ml. It is important that HBV DNA assays have similar performance across HBV genotypes and subtypes.…”

“…Hepatitis B virus infection is a pressing global health concern as up to 25% of affected patients reportedly die as a result of disease progression to cirrhosis and hepatic failure with accompanying hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) . As recommended by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the European Association for the Study of the Liver, the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver, and the Japan Society of Hepatology, treatment strategies for chronic HBV infection should include pegylated interferon (IFN) and/or nucleos(t)ide analogs (NAs) that provide favorable outcomes for patients with HBV through the suppression of HBV‐DNA, loss of hepatitis B e surface antigen (HBeAg), and ultimately disappearance of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) . Although both virologic and non‐virologic factors influence disease progression and survival in patients with chronic HBV infection, significant fibrosis strongly influences disease prognosis.…”

“…The Lumipulse HBsAg‐HQ is a commercially available reagent with the highest sensitivity for HBsAg detection (Table c) . A highly sensitive HBsAg detection assay might be of benefit in terms of prevention of HBV reactivation . Therefore, an assay combining a higher HBsAg detection assay and higher HBcAb assay might be very useful for identifying patients at risk of HBV reactivation.…”
