Novel Amoxicillin-Loaded Sericin Biopolymeric Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Optimization, Antibacterial and Wound Healing Activities

Abstract: Infected wounds are a major threat among diabetic patients. Technological advancements are currently increasing the number of new adjunctive therapies that may be potent agents for speeding recovery, lowering the amputation rate and limiting infection recurrences. A novel formula with promising antibacterial activity, namely sericin/propolis/Amoxicillin nanoparticles, was assessed as a potent treatment of infected wounds in normal and diabetic rats. Skin wound healing efficiency was assessed through wound heal… Show more

“…Sericin/propolis nanoparticles (nSE/PRO) were prepared according to Diab et al, 19 by adjusting different sericin to propolis ratio plus the stirring time of the reaction mixture. The suspensions attained were subjected to Zetasizer primitive characterization (Malvern Zetasizer Nano ZS, UK) to confirm the nanoparticles synthesis and stability 19 . Various Fluorouracil concentrations (10, 20 and 30 mg/ml) were added to the optimum trial then the combination index (CI) was determined.…”

“…Antibacterial activity was carried out using the disc-diffusion method; the discs were saturated with 25 µL of each fungal extract (20 mg/mL) and placed on the surface of inoculated Müeller–Hinton agar plates [ 30 ]. Further antibacterial activity evaluation was carried out by assessing the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values [ 31 ].…”

“…The antibacterial activity of the extracted oil was investigated using the disc diffusion method, and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and MIC index assessments using the microdilution technique in accordance with Diab et al [ 22 ] and EUCAST [ 23 ]. The minimal inhibitory concentration was the lowest essential oil concentration at which no visible growth was detected, while the MBC was recorded when 99.9% of the bacterial population was killed at the lowest concentration of the extracted essential oil.…”

“…The antibacterial activity of the prepared nano-chitosan/oil (25 mg/mL) nanofiber was investigated using the disc diffusion method, MIC and MBC according to Diab et al [ 22 ]. Nano-chitosan/ Eucalyptus oil showed the highest antimicrobial activity and was selected for further analyses.…”
