Novel AM60-SiO2 Nanocomposite Produced via Ultrasound-Assisted Casting; Production and Characterization

Abstract: There has been growing interest in developing new materials with higher strength-to-weight ratios. Therefore, AM60 magnesium alloy reinforced with SiO2 nanoparticles was synthesized using ultrasound-casting method for the first time, in this study. We introduced 1 and 2 wt.% of SiO2 nanoparticles into the samples. Introduction of nanoparticles led to the grain size drop in MS2 (AM60 + 2 wt.% SiO2) samples. In addition, this increased the hardness of samples from 34.8 Vickers hardness (HV) in M (AM60) to 51.5 H… Show more

“…However, the peaks at position 2θ = 60.81 • originated from the MgO (331) lattice plane [43]. On the other hand, the peaks at position 2θ = 71.89 • originated from the SiO 2 (020) lattice plane [44,45]. From the ultra nano hardness measurements (Figure 4) changes to the hardness and modulus of the elasticity were obtained (Figure 5a-f and Tables 1 and 2).…”

“…Either a pure metal or its alloy can be the matrix phase to fabricate nanocomposites. Different types of metals or their alloys are used to manufacture metal matrix nanocomposites, such as aluminium, copper, magnesium, nickel, and steel [26][27][28][29][30][31]. In comparison with conventional composite materials, manufacturing of metal matrix nanocomposite faces several challenges such as inhomogeneous distribution and/or dispersion of nanomaterial in the matrix phase, and controlling the interfacial adhesion between dissimilar matrix and nano reinforcing phases [18,32].…”

“…At the end of the 90s, some algorithms based in binarization via thresholding [14][15][16][17] have been used to obtain the basic mechanical propiertes of materials using the Vickers hardness testing [18][19][20][21][22]. In addition, to eliminate speckles in the segmantation morphological filters have been employed [14][15][16][17].…”
