“…They change ideas and adjust strategies in an attempt to waltz into the mainstream (The Economist 2018 ). In terms of political discourse, far-right parties covet the image of a normalized party fit to govern by eliminating the “politically incorrect” elements such as anti-Semitism and racism (Alduy 2016 ) 3 . In terms of campaign strategy, radical right-wing parties adopt a “people-friendly” strategy by drawing on the “positive energy” of traditional left-wing parties.…”

“…Cecile Alduy (2016) examined how the French extreme right party cleaned its repertoire of all markers of extremism (e.g., biological racism and antisemitism-related terms), and borrowed republican vocabulary ("social justice," "freedom," "rights"). Similarly, the extreme right in the Netherlands, led by Geert Wilders, renamed itself the "party for freedom", and invoked western values of individual freedom to oppose a reactionary, homophobic, and misogynistic representation of Islam (Alduy, 2016). Such considerations suggest added challenges when examining the public discourse about immigrants in the public sphere.…”

“…Scholars have also invoked the co-opting of ideas that belong to the neoliberal repertoire, such as social justice in France (Alduy, 2016) or freedom and human rights in Northern Europe (Bartlett, 2011), which allows for convincing narratives to be built that invoke the victimization of the majority groups. Anti-immigrant publics seem to contest the consensus of hegemonic neo-liberal discourse by elaborating and formulating alternative viewpoints that shift the consensus structures (i.e., as a white, I am injured/ as a Christian, I am being marginalized by Muslims), and can be safely expressed in the mainstream public sphere.…”
