In recent years, the coming of the entrepreneurial university has brought about a third role in academia, which involves greater visible exchange of academics with society and industry. In this paper, the authors investigate to what extent individual and organisational factors influence the propensity of academics to engage in different types of Third Mission (TM) activities. This study is based on a large-scale survey of academics in Iceland regarding engagement in socio-economic activities. The results indicate that “soft” activities such as community activities and external teaching and training can be better predicted by individual factors, while hard activities such as applied contract research and commercialisation can be better predicted by organisational factors. Overall, academics are most likely to participate in community-related activities. Hereby, academics from the STEM and health disciplines, with work experience outside of academia and who are open to new experiences are more likely to be engaged in applied contract research and commercialisation. Academics belonging to disciplines other than STEM and health sciences and those that on an average publish more peer-reviewed articles are more likely to disseminate their knowledge to a wider audience outside of academia through public science communication. Gender, rank, and teaching do not affect TM participation, but openness, performance, or discipline do.

Leyfisveiting, einkaleyfi eða sprotafyrirtaeki eru fátíðari samstarfsaðferðir við yfirfaerslu þekkingar og tíðkast fyrst og fremst hjá litlum hluta háskólafólks (Karlsdottir, Edvardsson og Heijstra, 2021). Þar sem stofnun fyrirtaekis felur í sér mikla áhaettu njóta skammtímaskuldbindingar á borð við samningsbundnar rannsóknir og ráðgjöf meiri vinsaelda í háskólasamfélaginu heldur en stofnun fyrirtaekja þar sem þar má vaenta haerri tekna í fyrirsjáanlegri framtíð (Klofsten og Jones-Evans, 2000).…”

Markmið þessarar rannsóknar er að greina umfang verkefna sem tengjast þriðja hlutverki háskóla á Íslandi, sem og samstarfsaðila háskólafólks í slíkum verkefnum og hindranir í samstarfi. Við smíðum kvarða um verkefni háskólafólks tengd þriðja hlutverkinu (ÞH) og um skynjaðar hindranir sem standa í vegi fyrir auknu samstarfi. Könnun var send á alla 674 fastráðna akademíska starfsmenn Háskóla Íslands snemma árs 2021. Niðurstöður sýna að háskólafólk á í mestu samstarfi innan eigin deildar og við erlenda háskóla, en í minnstu samstarfi við íslensk og erlend fyrirtæki. Háskólafólk er almennt jákvætt fyrir auknu samstarfi en skortir tíma og tækifæri. Yfir það heila er þátttaka í ÞH ekki mjög mikil, og kvarði okkar sýnir mjög litla virkni í viðskiptatengdri nýsköpun. Algengustu verkefni tengjast fyrirlestrum, málstofum og kynningum utan háskólaumhverfisins. Konur eru líklegri til að taka þátt í fræðslutengdum verkefnum og karlar í nýsköpunartengdum verkefnum. Þegar ÞH er greint út frá akademískri stöðu kemur fram að samanborið við aðra akademíska starfsmenn mælast prófessorar hærri á öllum þáttum fyrir utan fræðslutengd verkefni. Háskólafólk við Hugvísindasvið er ólíklegast til að taka þátt í verkefnum tengdum ÞH. Kennsla er helsta skynjaða hindrunin fyrir auknu samstarfi og kynjamunur er á skynjuðum hindrunum, að því leyti að konur skynja kennslu og markaðsfærslu sem stærri hindranir en karlar. Akademískir starfsmenn sem ekki eru prófessorar skynja kennslu sem stærri hindrun en prófessorar. Háskólafólk við Hugvísindasvið skynjar frekar þætti utan háskólaumhverfisins sem hindranir fyrir samstarfi, samanborið við önnur fræðasvið.
