Parthenium weed (Parthenium hysterophorus L.), an invasive alien species, has been spreading at alarming rate in Ethiopia, causing biodiversity degradation, yield losses in field and horticultural crops, health problems to human beings and livestock. A study on the socioeconomic and ecological impacts of P. hysterophorus was conducted in five Kebeles (lowest administrative division) of Boset Woreda (District), Ethiopia. Data was collected using Ecological Survey, Semi Structured Interviews, Focus Group Discussion, and Field Observations. 200 quadrats were employed where every plant species found in each quadrat were counted, recorded and identified. Data on informant's perception about the first appearance, infestation levels, agents of dispersal, impact, and cultural management of the Parthenium weed were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Shannon Diversity Index (H′), Species Richness, Evenness, and Jaccard's Similarity Index were executed to evaluate Parthenium's effect on species diversity of the weed flora. 78 Herbaceous plants belonging to 59 genera and 21 families were collected. Poaceae (28.2%) and Asteraceae (16.7%) were the dominant families of weeds observed in the study Kebeles. Digalu and Merko Kebeles had high infestation of P. hysterophorus represented by high distribution, abundance, and dominance of the weed, but with corresponding low Richness, H′, and evenness of herbaceous plants. Species Richness of herbaceous flora and abundance of Parthenium weed reveled significant negative association (P < 0.01; R 2 = 0.93). Most of the informants believed that Parthenium affected crop and livestock production as well as human health. Farmers employed hand weeding, plowing, and manual clearing to manage the weed. For effective use of the weed, Integrated Weed Management approaches are required to check the spread and reduce the adverse impacts.

We apply a multidisciplinary approach to settle the dispute over the generic affiliation of the Himalayan species Senecio kumaonensis (based on Cacalia penninervis). Some floral micromorphological characters of this species, including shape of anther bases, configuration of anther collars, and anther endothecial tissue cell wall thickenings, are confirmed to perfectly match those of Senecio and this has obviously resulted in the placement of the species within that genus. Chromosome counts indicate S. kumaonensis has 2n = 40, a number common to Senecio and Synotis but not occurring in Parasenecio (the correct generic name for the Asian species previously referred to Cacalia), which has 2n = 52, 58, and 60. The presence of six subterminal-centromeric (st) chromosomes in the karyotype of S. kumaonensis, however, lends strong support to the close relationship of this species to Synotis. Our phylogenetic analyses based on ITS/ ETS sequences also place S. kumaonensis in Synotis. In this species the anther tail feature, once deemed to be diagnostic for Synotis (anther bases in Synotis with sterile, tailed auricles vs. those in Senecio without such auricles, obtuse to sagittate), has an exception as evidenced from phylogeny. We therefore transfer S. kumaonensis to Synotis and, as the epithet "penninervis" has hitherto never been used in the genus, we propose the new combination Syn. penninervis for this species.

Observations on living plants and herbarium specimens have convinced us that Synotis otophylla (Compositae -Senecioneae) from south Xizang (Tibet), China, must be merged with the Himalayan Parasenecio chenopodiifolius . However, is the plant a Synotis or a Parasenecio ? We have examined fl oral micro-morphological and cytological characters of P. chenopodiifolius , and performed molecular phylogenetic analyses based on ITS and ETS sequence data. Th e anther collar of this taxon is balusterform, and the endothecial tissue cell wall thickenings are radial. Th ese conform to the fl oral micro-characters of Synotis but diff er from those of Parasenecio , which has subcylindrical anther collars, and polarized endothecial tissue cell wall thickenings. Chromosome counts indicate the taxon has 2n ϭ 40, a number common in Synotis , whereas Parasenecio has 2n ϭ 60. Our phylogenetic analyses based on ITS/ETS sequences also place P. chenopodiifolius in Synotis . We make the new combination S. chenopodiifolia and synonymize S. otophylla .
