Notes on the Marine Algae of the International Biosphere Reserve Seaflower, Caribbean Colombia V: First Study of the Algal Flora of Quitasueño Bank

Abstract: During a biodiversity expedition to the northern cays of the Archipelago of San Andrés, Old Providence and Saint Catalina, we collected macroalgal samples along Quitasueño Bank, a submerged 60 km-long coralline bank. This is the fist phycological study on the bank. We present a preliminary list of 76 macroalgae, including ten species of cyanobacteria. Fifteen of these taxa are new records for Colombia, and an additional nine are new records for the Archipelago. With this preliminary study, we increase the numb… Show more

“…This indicates local fishery as a significant source of items, a pattern that has been previously reported in oceanic islands and also on undeveloped continental beaches (Ribic et al, 2012;Eriksson et al, 2013;Lavers and Bond, 2017). In the SBR, the fishery has been recognized as a traditional and intense activity (CCO, 2015;Gavio et al, 2015), and it might also be a significant source of plastics and microplastics to the atoll and beaches.…”

“…Recent results, obtained by expeditions [52] and independent research, carried out in the Seaflower Reserve of the Caribbean Sea, contributed to the identification, and listing of new marine algae (i.e., micro-, macroalgae, and cyanobacteria) for Colombia [53][54][55][56][57][58][59].…”

“…Notes: the genus Dasya C. Agardh includes red algae with a hairy and delicate appearance and rigid to flaccid Gavio, 2012) and D. rigidula (Gavio et al, 2015). The taxonomy of Dasya is very difficult, and its diversity is still far from being satisfactorily understood.…”

According to Schneider et al (2018), it is possible that reports of C. compressa Harvey and C. vieillardii in warm waters of the western Atlantic correspond to C. hasselbringii C.W.…”
