NOTES ON THE BIOLOGY OF TELENOMUS COELODASIDIS (HYMENOPTERA: SCELIONIDAE) AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO THE SADDLED PROMINENT, HETEROCAMPA GUTTIVITTA (LEPIDOPTERA: NOTODONTIDAE)

Abstract: A biological study of Telenomus coelodasidis Ashm. revealed a close temporal synchronization between this egg parasitoid and its primary host, Heterocampa guttivitta (Wlkr.). The wasp reproduced parthenogenetically in the laboratory and completed development in unfertilized host eggs. Wasp activity was greatest at relatively low temperatures, and longevity was significantly greater when individuals were provided with food. The second and third stage larvae and the pupa are described, as well as the sequence of… Show more

“…Accordingly, female egg parasitoids tend to prefer younger hosts (Fedde, ; Strand & Vinson, ; Orr et al., ; Chabi‐Olaye et al., , ; Bruce et al., ). Egg fertilization can also improve parasitoid fitness (Ticehurst & Allen, ; Fedde, ). For example, infertile eggs of Heliothis virescens (Fabricius) lack a serosa, resulting in a rapid desiccation of the host before the egg parasitoid Telenomus heliothidis Ashmead can complete its development (Strand et al., ).…”

“…egg parasitism have usually been observed on hosts that oviposit several hundred eggs grouped in masses (Neilson and Cuming 1958;Ciesla 1964Ciesla , 1965Fedde et al 1973;Schultz and Allen 1975;Anderson and Kaya 1977;Bustillo and Drooz 1977;Agudelo-Silva 1980) or in speciÞc locations such as under leaves (Ticehurst and Allen 1973). Lambdina fiscellaria has a completely different oviposition behavior.…”

“…They should be considered more thoroughly in biological control programs. Telenomus alsophilae Viereck, which is probably the best known species of the genus (Ticehurst and Allen 1973), has been used successfully in a biological control program against Oxydia trychiata (Guené e) in Colombia (Bustillo and Drooz 1977). Research on the biology and ecology of Telenomus spp.…”
