Notes on habitat use by the Russet-eared guenon (Cercopithecus erythrotisWaterhouse 1838) on Bioko island, Equatorial Guinea

Abstract: The Russet-eared guenon (Cercopithecus erythrotis) is one of the less studied and more threatened primate species of Africa. Habitat preference of this guenon was analyzed on Bioko island, Republic of Equatorial Guinea. Almost all the island is inhabited by this primate, that is able to live near human settlements. The Russeteared guenon is found preferentially in primary tropical forest, but can be observed also in montane and secondary forest, and even at the beaches or in the Alpine grasslands of the hiF.he… Show more

“…As in Cameroon (Gartlan & Struhsaker, 1972), they fled usually here also on the ground, not in the trees, from man. The other sympatrtic guenons in the island; Cercopithecus nictitans, Cercopithecus pogonias and Cercopithecus erythrotis are all strictly arboreal, and only Cercopithecus erythrotis reaches altitudes over 1400 m over sea level (Gonzalez-Kirchner, 1996a, 1996b. Habitat preferences would appear to separate the population of Preuss's guenon from all another guenon species on Bioko island.…”

“…Observational methods followed to study habitat use were those proposed by Mittermeier & van Roosmalen (1981) and McGraw (1994), and used in previous studies (Gonzalez-Kirchner, 1994, 1996a, 1996b. Observational data were collected alongside transects that cover proportionally all the different habitats represented on Mount Basile.…”

“…Cercopithecus ascanius was also located in many nonprotected, variable‐sized forest fragments around Kampala, Uganda, and was considered abundant in most of these sites (Baranga, 2004). Similarly, C. erythrotis was found to be the only diurnal primate to occur in most forest types across Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea, making it the most abundant and widespread primate there (Gonzalez‐Kirchner, 1996).…”
