Notes on Designer Entrepreneurs and “The Geppetto Effect”

Abstract: The skills and talents of a design professional are not necessarily the skills and talents that will help them succeed with a startup business. Many “entrepreneur designers” could do with some help from professionals who can help them see the “big picture.” When designer entrepreneurs fall in love with their designs, the perfect can become the enemy of the good.

“…The authors posit a new concept, ‘Design Authorship’ (D-authorship), as an intrinsic driver that motivates designers to take the leap into the entrepreneurial journey regardless of user research, marketing study, or any predicted commercial success. A designer-entrepreneur’s authorship is divided into three components that are complementary and not mutually exclusive: craft, design and art ( Valencia Hernandez & Pearce, 2019 ). Evidence in this study shows that some d-entrepreneurs replace user-centricity with their personal ethos, needs and aspirations as a key driver of the entrepreneurial journey.…”

This phenomenon has been named ‘The Geppetto Effect’ ( Valencia Hernandez & Pearce, 2019 ). The D-entrepreneurs spent considerable time in expressing perfection, diligence and a need to achieve a sense of authorship through the purpose and characteristics of the product.…”

“…Although tasks in an established company are defined, those required inside a startup are not as clear which means designers need to be trained to communicate and exchange knowledge in interdisciplinary situations. Because of this uncertainty of startup’s tasks, as well as the lack of needed training, Design entrepreneurs find it difficult to launch and manage a business (Valencia Hernandez & Pearce, 2019).…”

“…The body of knowledge relating to this sort of designer-led entrepreneurship has been slowly but steadily increasing, in the form of handbooks (Varon and Alberti, 2019;Talarico and Heller, 2016;Basadur and Goldsby, 2016), tools (Colombo et al, 2017), typologies (Valencia et al, 2018, Chen at al., 2018, case studies (Kremel and Edman, 2019;Valencia and Pearce, 2019;Val et al, 2019;Gaglione and Gaziulusoya, 2019;Liu and Rieple, 2019;Mata-Garcia, 2017Moller et al, 2013 and models (Mueller and Thoring, 2012).…”
