Semantic roles constitute one of the most notorious notions in linguistics because they have been defined in numerous ways depending on the author's theoretical framework and goals. Typically these definitions are somehow, more or less explicitly, based on verbs and their properties. In this paper, semantic roles are discussed from a completely different perspective; we examine genuinely verbless constructions attested in Finnish newspaper headlines. The paper addresses three main questions: First, what kinds of constructions do not need a finite verb to express dynamic events? Second, what kind of information remains unconceptualized in verbless constructions? And finally, what are semantic roles based on if there is no verb? The goal of the paper is to show that verbs are not needed to define semantic roles, as an array of semantic roles can be recognized even in constructions lacking a verb.

Abstract. Delbecque Nicole, Acerca del perfil agentivo de las pasivas [On the Agent Profile in thePassive Voice]. Studia Romanica Posnaniensia, Adam Mickiewicz University Press, Poznań, vol. XXXI: 2004, pp. 225-237. ISBN 83-232-1353-4, ISSN 0137-2475 The modulation of the relationship between the "downstream" subject of passive constructions and the upstream participant, expressed by an obliąue, is a function of the parameters continuity/discontinuity and substantiality/circumstantiality. The preposition used is revealing how the two axes combine. Por 'by' differs from de 'of, con 'with' and en 'in', in that it yields a discontinuous yet substantial view of the relational profile. The discourse orientation of the agent's "conditioning" intervention does not only vary according to the kind of passive construction and the kind of entity denoted by the oblique, but also crucially hinges on the semantic category of the verb. HIPÓTESISLa pasiva presenta una codificación marcada de la escena (Langacker 1991: 229 ss.). Se accede al proceso por el participante que se encuentra 'rio abajo' y, en principio, la cabeza de la cadena de accion puede permanecer implicita, e.g. (1). Al ir especificado perifrasticamente e introducido mediante la preposición por, el agente aparece como el participante focalizado, e.g. (2a). Sin embargo, la literatura senala que este complemento oblicuo solo aparece en muy contadas ocasiones, especialmente en la pasiva refleja (2b). Mi hipótesis es que la perspectiva 'rio arriba' que caracteriza a la voz pasiva no se limita unicamente a la opción de focalizar el agente o rebajarlo, sino que la voz pasiva permite modular la configuración de los roles participativos de un modo mas sutil y variado aun que la voz activa correspondiente.
