Note: Vibration suppression using tunable vibration absorber based on stiffness variable magneto-rheological gel

Abstract: This paper proposes a novel adaptive tunable vibration absorber (TVA) based on a smart material the magnetorheological gel (MRG) to achieve a wide range of tonal vibration suppression on the primary system to protect any connected sensitive device. The vibration suppression performance of the MRG TVA was analyzed by conducting a modal test of the primary system under different magnetic fields. The experiment verified that the proposed MRG TVA can be controlled to produce 379% of stiffness change or 115% of tun… Show more

“…Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) and magnetorheological gels (MRGs) are smart materials with rheological properties that change depending on the strength of the externally applied magnetic field [1]. MREs are manufactured by mixing iron particles with a silicon or rubber base, whereas MRGs are composed of iron particles in gelatin-based materials [2,3].…”

“…Davis et al 7 proposed a piezoelectric semi-active torsional vibration absorber, which controlled the stiffness of piezoelectric ceramics by changing the electric field and ultimately achieved semi-active control of the natural frequency of the absorber. Kim et al 8,9 and Shin et al 10 proposed an adaptive tunable vibration absorber (ATVA) using MRE to robustly suppress harmonic vibration of a miniature cryogenic cooler under varying disturbance. Lee et al 11 designed a magneto-rheological elastomer flexible coupling whose torsional stiffness can be controlled by an embedded magnetic field generator, and torsional vibration experiments were conducted to validate the performance of the proposed magnetorheological elastomer coupling.…”

“…These features equip MR gel with great potentials in engineering applications, such as developing damper and vibration absorber. Till now, there are only a few works been done till now on the development of the MR gel devices [9][10][11] and the majority of the research on the MR gel focused on the preparation and characterization of the material. Zhang et al [12][13] have investigated the dynamic behaviors of MR gel with the various weight fractions of carbonyl-iron-particle using large-amplitude oscillation shear.…”
