Note: Tunable notch filter based on liquid crystal technology for microwave applications

Abstract: In this work, a compact design of an electrically tunable notch filter, based on liquid crystal (LC) technology, has been designed, manufactured, and characterized. The proposal has been achieved through particular configuration schemes with low cost inverted-microstrip structures and conventional spurlines structures due to its ease of integration. Central frequency tunability has been induced by applying low ac voltages, thus involving low power consumption. For these devices, filter responses have been appr… Show more

“…They are connected with telecommunication devices needs or nondestructive microwaves apparatus to control goods and people [19], cholesteric lasers [20,21], manufacturing tunable metamaterial [22][23][24][25]. Different devices such as tunable spatial modulators for light and laser beam steering and for holography [26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33], switchable phase shifters [34][35][36], various types of tunable filters which select or remove bands [37][38][39][40], tunable capacitors [41], antennas [42], lenses [43,44] were manufactured, and others such as photonic fiber [45] (see also, for more information, reviewed papers [46,47]). For these purposes, different high birefringence materials from 0.2 to more than 0.5 are now available [48][49][50][51][52], but further development and improvement of their properties is still necessary.…”

“…The center section of ROGERS 5880 substrate is hollow out to carry the liquid crystal. Then, liquid crystal is trickled into the slot through the injection hole by filling plug [14]. The different dielectric substrates and metal substrate are assembled together by conductive adhesive to realize the packaging.…”

“…LC‐based notch filters have been reported in the literature only in the last few years . Torrecilla et al, for example, developed a spiral spurline microstrip filter combined with the nematic LC 1631E in which the central notch frequency could be tuned from 3.75 to 3.40 GHz using 12 V AC bias.…”
