Note on the Use of the Gibbs Entropy Postulate in Statistical Mechanics

Abstract: In developing the ensemble theory of statistical mechanics, the thermodynamic temperature T, can be introduced in a direct manner avoiding the intermediate use of a Lagrange multiplier, if one adopts the Gibbs entropy postulate and uses a general criterion for thermodynamic equilibrium. This procedure is described in detail for both closed and open systems.
