Note on Spin Doubling in the Doublet Sigma States of CO+

Abstract: On the photographic plates of the CO2 spectrum made by S. Mrozowski from the 30-foot, 30,000 lines per inch, Chicago grating, were found pictures of the first negative bands and the comet tail bands of CO + in which the 2 S spin splittings were resolved. From the 2 2-> 2 2 transition, the absolute differences of the spin doubling coefficients were measured. The absolute values of y 0 " and y\' for the lowest 2 S state were measured from the 2 II-* 2 S transition, and their algebraic signs determined by conside… Show more

“…The A(t = 10)$X(t = 18) interaction is different in that all the unperturbed rotational levels of X(t = 18) lie above the corresponding J-levels of that employed direct fitting of the molecular constants and perturbation parameters to the measured line positions. This work [13] represented the first successful analysis of the perturbations in 12 C 16 O + with a modern direct fitting approach, and led to selfconsistent estimates of the electronic spin-orbit H SO ðrÞ ¼ hP; rjH SO jR; ri and rotational-electronic H RE ðrÞ ¼ hP; rj b L þ jR; ri matrix elements over a narrow radial range, r = 1.475-1.502 Å. However, the results were somewhat flawed owing to the use of incorrectly constrained values of the spin-rotation constants c X t for the X 2 R þ state.…”

“…. Jakubek et al[15] pointed out that the measurements of ðc B t -c X t Þ by Woods[16], which were employed by Coxon and Foster[13] to obtain c X t , were unreliable, and that the ðc B t -c X t Þ values of Rao and Sarma[17] were rejected[13] only because of a calculation error in Ref [17]…”
