Bia Kl. and Zuckertia Baill. have long been considered sections of the genus Tragia L. Webster revalidated the generic status of Bia based on morphological and molecular analyses and proposed two sections, Bia sect. Bia restricted to South America comprising four species, and B. sect. Zuckertia as a monotypic section from Mexico. Also based on morphological and more recent phylogenetic analyses, we propose the revalidation of the generic status of Zuckertia, present a new circumscription and morphological data for the genus Bia, and describe B. capivarensis D. Medeiros, Senna‐Valle & Alves sp. nov., a new species from Serra da Capivara National Park, Piauí, Brazil. Based on the collected material, an illustration and a detailed description of the new species are provided, as well as a key to Zuckertia and Bia and their species.

a b s t r a c t Edited by J FloresKeywords: Ethnobiology Plant diversity Local botanical knowledge Euphorbiaceae stands out among angiosperms in its species richness and in the number of reported uses from ethnobotanical surveys in Brazil and other tropical countries. In Brazilian semiarid regions, species of Euphorbiaceae are among the most frequently used by rural communities, especially for medicinal purposes. The present study investigated the presence of species of Euphorbiaceae and their use by a rural population from the Araripe National Forest region, a protected area located in the Chapada do Araripe (NE Brazil). This area is considered to be of primary importance for conservation, and it is lacking in scientific research. The survey of the richness of Euphorbiaceae occurred through opportunistic plant collections and phytosociological studies between August 2011 and June 2012. We performed 153 interviews with informants who were selected based on general nonprobabilistic household sampling and administered semi-structured interviews using a checklist interview that considered all the species of the family Euphorbiaceae registered in collections. We found 23 species of Euphorbiaceae, with the genus Croton (5 species) being highlighted. This study adds new occurrences of Euphorbiaceae to the region compared with the results found in previous surveys; 50% of the collected Euphorbiaceae species were considered useful, with Manihot esculenta (cassava) considered of the highest importance, with a higher utilization rate in the community ponds. The study also indicated the use of castor bean (Ricinus communis), Croton heliotropiifolius, and Jatropha gossypiifolia. The category of use that was most cited was medicinal, and most of the useful species were obtained by informants in anthropogenic areas. The richness of Euphorbiaceae in the region was representative; however, further studies should be conducted in the study area. The dynamics of Euphorbiaceae use in the studied rural population did not appear to pose a threat to native species within the conservation area.

Several studies carried out in the state of Paraíba (Northeast Brazil) have described how rural populations interact with useful woody plants available in the Caatinga. In this context, this study aimed to describe and analyze the interrelationship between residents in the rural community of Santa Rita (Cariri of Paraíba) and useful woody plants, evaluating their availability through ethnobotanical and plant inventory. The research was conducted in the municipality of Congo, and the data were collected between 2011 and 2012 through semistructured interview with the householders (men and women). The data were analyzed using the use value. For phytosociological sampling, all woody shrub-tree individuals with DGL (stem diameter at ground level) ≥ 3 cm were recorded and their estimated height was also recorded. Fifty-six useful plant species were recorded, of which 42 were identified and distributed in 37 genera and 20 families. Myracrodruon urundeuva Allemão, Tabebuia aurea (Silva Manso) Benth. & Hook. f. ex S. Moore, and Sideroxylon obtusifolium (Roem & Schult.), T. D. Penn were the most cited species. Technology, medical, fuel, and construction were the main use categories. Regarding the Use Value (UV), T. aurea (UV = 5.88), Aspidosperma. pyrifolium Mart. (pereiro) (3.74), and S. obtusifolium (quixabeira) (3.71) were the most prominent species. Twenty-four species belonging to 21 genera and 12 families were recorded in the phytosociology. Of the 2000 sampled individuals, 55 were not identified. The following botanical families stood out: Euphorbiaceae, (1524 individuals), Fabaceae (271 individuals), and Apocynaceae (117 individuals). Croton blanchetianus Baill (marmeleiro) (1400 individuals), Poincianella pyramidalis Tul. (catingueira) (198 individuals) and A. pyrifolium (pereiro) (117 individuals) were the most prominent species. This study indicates that the local vegetation composition in the rural community of Santa Rita results from high degrees of anthropization; therefore, it is required a detailed study on the dynamics of use and removal of individuals that showed the highest cultural significance and use value.
