The dynamics of the organic residues added to the soil are closely related to its mineralization rate. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the organic carbon mineralization in soil samples incubated with different doses of biochar and organic compost from poultry litter. Carbon mineralization was evaluated experimentally by measuring the C-CO2 liberated by incubating 200 g of soil mixed with different doses 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 t ha-1 of both biochar and organic compost for 61 days. The soil microbial activity, and consequently the carbon mineralization, increased with the application of doses of biochar and organic compost from the poultry litter. The highest C-CO2 mineralization was observed in the treatments that received organic compost. The carbon mineralization process followed chemical kinetics with two simultaneous reactions. The greatest amount of released and accumulated C-CO2 was observed in the soil incubated with 15 and 20 t ha-1 of organic compost from the poultry litter. The doses of biochar did not influence the content of mineralized carbon; this behavior was not verified with the use of this compost, whose highest content corresponded to 85.69 mg kg-1, applying 20 t ha-1.

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) has cultural, social and economic importance due to its rusticity and wide climate adaptation, being cultivated in Brazil for human and animal food. However, cultivation is carried out mainly without fertilization and with Creole cultivars. The objective was to evaluate the yield and quality of roots of sweet potato cultivars with and without fertilization of chicken manure in an Oxisol. The experiment was carried out under field conditions in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons in a randomized block design with three replications in 6 m2 plots. Four sweet potato cultivars, BRS Rubissol, BRS Amélia, BRS Cuia and Crioula, were used. Root productivity, number, length and diameter of roots, and cracked roots were evaluated. In both cultivation conditions, the virus-free cultivars Rubissol, Amélia and Cuia showed higher average root yields, 43,941, 45,498 and 52,095 kg ha-1, respectively, compared to the Crioula cultivar with 3,389 kg ha-1. Fertilization with chicken manure does not increase the productivity, number, length and diameter of roots, but it does increase the number of cracked roots. The cultivation of virus-free sweet potato without fertilizer reduces cracked roots by an average of 51.4%.

The objective of this work was to identify, diagnose and characterize the sawmills in four municipalities in the State of Minas Gerais (Divinésia, Senador Firmino, Brás Pires and Dores do Turvo) that provide lumber for the industries in the Furniture Hub in Ubá, State of Minas Gerais. A semi-structured questionnaire with open questions, answered in loco and accompanied by a responsible person (interviewer), with information on the identification of the potentialities and fragilities of the local lumber sector as well as to know the raw material (logs), the wood split processes, the internal management, the qualification of the employees, the machinery, products, market and prospects of the sector in these municipalities. It was found that Eucalyptus wood is the most used. The diameter of the logs is shown as the factor that affects the yield in 100% of the analyzed sawmills, where cracking and variability of the logs are the main difficulties of working with the raw material. The lumber sector in the analyzed municipalities needs a greater qualification, both managerial and technical, to improve the activity. In addition, it is necessary to better organize the companies related to the lumber sector through associations and support from local entities and greater exposure of the products to the local consumers.
