‘Not anymore, not yet’: Australian–Hungarians rediscover the ‘old‐new’ Hungary

Abstract

Homecomings and return migrations, recently referred to as 'silent migration' (Stefansson, 2004), have become increasingly significant in the post-socialist societies of Eastern Europe (Darieva, 2005). In such cases, 'homecoming migration', which was formerly unimaginable due to closed borders and restrictions on mobility, has now become quite feasible. In this article, I pose the following question: What happens when an exile's dream of homeland and return gives way to a real experience of
