Subject librarianship (SL) has long been practiced in academic libraries. But, with the transformation brought about by socio-cultural and technological factors, the roles have evolved. This article discussed the traditional role of Kazakh subject librarians, their current practices, and personal strategies in delivering services including information literacy in academic libraries. In Kazakhstan, subject librarians provide information literacy sessions and workshops dedicated for specific classes. A quantitative research method was adopted for this study using an online questionnaire for data gathering. It utilized purposive sampling to identify the competencies and performing tasks of subject librarians. It also analyzed how subject specialists promote their programs and relationship building strategies and investigates the differences and similarities with the available Western interpretations of subject librarianship. A total of 57 Kazakh university libraries and 80 librarians responded to the survey questions. Results of the research provides guidance for the implementation of subject librarianship practices of academic libraries in the region. To better serve their communities, subject librarians shall develop an excellent relationship, shared commitment, offer quality assistance, open communication, and always instils professionalism. Ultimately, the study reflects on the uniqueness of subject librarianship in Kazakhstan as well as its similarity in the practice of subject librarianship globally.

The use of Web 2.0 technologies such as social media and user-generated content and their educational prospective attract the attention of many researchers. The results of the vast majority of these studies suggest that the use of social networks in the educational process can be helpful in increasing the quality of education and making it accessible to more students. In order to clarify the students’ opinions, a survey was conducted among students from various majors at leading universities in two Central Asian countries, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. The main objective of the study was to determine factors affecting students’ attitudes toward the usage of Web 2.0 technologies for educational purposes, as well as to examine the difference in the perceptions of Kyrgyz and Kazakh students. As the survey results show, social networks and online resources with user-generated content are gaining more and more importance for students. However, this popularity is not always related to education; the goals of using social networks are mostly for communication and entertainment. The use of social networks in education today is possible as an auxiliary means of conducting lessons. Students rather take the initiative and use social networks as a means of exchanging information on the tasks they perform, as a platform for discussing the topics studied, and the projects being implemented, but not as a dedicated system for education. Despite the similarity in the use of information technologies (and social networks) for educational purposes, in Kazakhstan, students begin to use the Internet specifically for education earlier than Kyrgyz students. Also, students from Kazakhstan more often use platforms in the national language.

The Study into Theoretical and Methodological Readiness of Defectology Students to Pursue Master Degree Programmes

Introduction.Training a competitive specialist at the level of a master program is an important educational goal. The problem of the continuity of educational levels as a condition for the quality of graduate training is debatable, because the focus of such discussions is often around the methodological components of the educational program, rather than the conceptual guidelines for professional growth. The aim of the research was to study the level of studentsʼ readiness to follow master degree programs in the field of special (defectological) education. Materials and Methods. The research constitutes a theoretical analysis of the problem of readiness of defectology students to pursue the master degree level of education. In the course of empirical research, the results of a questionnaire and self-assessment were used. The survey included 68 master degree students of 4 master degree programs. Statistical processing of the results was carried out using the Statistica 10.0 software package for the Windows. Results. The authors found that the target guidelines for the reconstruction of the professional training of master students in the field of special (defectological) education is a set of expected knowledge, skills, and abilities from the standpoint of modern requirements and social need for the activities of a specialist in the changing conditions of education, upbringing and development of children with disabilities; the designing of a master program requires the actualization of theoretical and methodological training, taking into account its extrapolation to the level of implementation of applied professional competencies in accordance with the modern needs of society and the dynamics of the educational labor market. Discussion and Conclusion. The results obtained facilitate the development of professional training of master students in the field of special (defectological) education and allow us to consider theoretical and methodological readiness to pursue a master course in terms of continuity of educational tasks and the continuity of educational levels that make up the fundamental principles for the preparation of a competitive graduate.
