Nosocomial Outbreaks Caused byLeuconostoc mesenteroidessubsp.mesenteroides

Abstract: From July 2003 through October 2004, 42 patients became infected by strains of Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp. mesenteroides (genotype 1) in different departments of Juan Canalejo Hospital in northwest Spain. During 2006, 6 inpatients, also in different departments of the hospital, became infected (genotypes 2–4). Parenteral nutrition was the likely source.

“…Another advantage of using a DNAbased microarray approach may be to limit one's exposure to Leuconostoc spp. Leuconostoc spp., including L. mesenteroides and L. pseudomesenteroides, are emerging as human pathogens that can lead to severe infections, particularly in immunocompromised individuals (Albanese et al 2006;Bou et al 2008;Deng et al 2012;Kumudhan and Mars 2004;Shin et al 2011;Taneja et al 2005;Tas ‚kapilioglu et al 2011;Tholpady et al 2010;Wong et al 2012;Yang et al 2015). However, considering the rarity of Leuconostoc infections in people and the large presence of Leuconostoc spp.…”

“…With the increasing use of vancomycin in clinical practice, some new vancomycin-resistant pathogenic bacteria are likely to appear. Compromised immunity (Montejo et al, 2000;Espinoza et al, 1997;Ferrer et al, 1995), use of vancomycin, parenteral nutrition (Bou et al, 2008) and contaminated surgical implanted devices, such as central venous catheters (Bou et al, 2008), have been considered as risk factors for Leuconostoc spp. infection, although Leuconostoc infections have also been documented in otherwise healthy patients.…”

“…Infection may have been associated with central venous catheterization or as a consequence of parenteral nutrition. VRE isolated from the ascites may have been associated with intestinal colonization (Bou et al, 2008). As the permeability of the gastric cell wall was changed and damage to the skin membrane barrier occurred, colonization of the abdominal cavity was possible.…”
