Nosocomial Infections in Pediatric Patients A European, Multicenter Prospective Study

Abstract: We found large differences in NI frequency and microbial epidemiology in this European study. Viruses were the main pathogens in general pediatrics units. Catheter-related sepsis and CNS were frequent in newborns. A high frequency of multiresistant bacteria was observed in some units. Clinical monitoring of NIs and bacterial resistance profiles are required in all pediatric units.

“…Abstracts for which there was no agreement as to the inclusion were analyzed jointly and the decision was made by consensus. “…Pneumonia is among the three main types of infection in the pediatric ICU and, as in adults, is more frequent among patients on mechanical ventilation 4,27,30,31,61 . The diagnosis of VAP, however, is challenging and may explain the differences in the diverse studies concerning the occurrence of this event as well as possible risk factors.…”

“…En niños estas infecciones presentan tasas elevadas al considerar etiologías virales respiratorias y gastrointestinales (rotavirus), y habitualmente reflejan la epidemiología estacional de la comunidad [2][3][4] . Así entonces, la internación de un niño a un centro hospitalario, debido a la vía de transmisión de rotavirus (habitualmente mano portada) y a su relativa facilidad de diseminación intrahospitalaria, conlleva un riesgo de adquisición de una rotavirosis nosocomial 5,6 .…”

“…The first national prevalence survey in Finland, conducted in 2005, identified E. coli, S. aureus and Enterococcus faecalis as the three most common pathogens causing HAIs in adult patients [42]. In pediatric studies, CoNS (20%-26%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (5%-20%), S. aureus (11-15%), and Candida species (4%-9%) were predominant pathogens, in addition to viruses (mostly rotavirus and respiratory syncytial virus), which were identified in 22%-23% of all HAIs [43,44].…”

“…When the HAI rate was sorted by the age of the patients, the HAI rate in patients under two years of age (11.5 infections per 100 admissions) was substantially higher than in the other age groups (3.6 infections per 100 admissions in patients aged 2 to 4 years; 2.6 infections per 100 admissions in patients 5 years of age or older). A European study of 17 pediatric centers reported an overall HAI rate of 2.5% including five types of HAI: BSIs, lower respiratory tract infections, UTIs, SSIs, and gastrointestinal infections [44].…”
