With the advent of ICT-based healthcare applications, various formats of health data are generated every day in huge volume. Such data, consisting of unstructured, semi-structured and structured data, has every characteristic of Big data. NoSQL databases are generally preferred for storing such type of health data with the objective of improving query performance. However, for efficient retrieval and processing of Big Health Data and for resource optimization, suitable data models and design of the NoSQL databases are important requirements. Unlike relational databases, no standard methods or tools exist for NoSQL database design. In this work, we adopt an ontology-based schema design approach. We propose that an ontology, which captures the domain knowledge, be used for developing a health data model. An ontology for primary healthcare is described in this paper. We also propose an algorithm for designing the schema of a NoSQL database, keeping in mind the characteristics of the target NoSQL store, using a related ontology, a sample query set, some statistical information of the queries, and performance requirements of the query set. The ontology proposed by us for primary healthcare domain and the above mentioned algorithm along with a set of queries are used for generating a schema targeting MongoDB datastore. The performance of the proposed design is compared with a relational model developed for the same primary healthcare data and the effectiveness of our proposed approach is demonstrated. The entire experiment has been carried out on MongoDB cloud platform.

The growth of structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data produced by the new applications is a result of the development and expansion of social networks, the Internet of Things, web technology, mobile devices, and other technologies. However, as traditional databases became less suitable to manage rapidly growing data quantity and the variety of data structures, a new class of database management systems named NoSQL is required to satisfy the new requirements. Although NoSQL databases are generally schemaless, significant research has been conducted on NoSQL design. A literature review presented in this paper let us claim the need to create modeling techniques to describe how to structure data in NoSQL databases. Key-value is one of the NoSQL families, which has received too little attention, especially about its design methodology. Most studies have focused on the other families like column-oriented and document-oriented. This paper aims to present a design approach named KVMod (key-value modeling) specific to key-value databases. The purpose is to provide to the scientific community and engineers a methodology for the design of key-value stores using the maximum automation and therefore the minimum human intervention, which equals the minimum of errors. A software tool called KVDesign has been implemented to automate the proposed methodology and thus the most time-consuming database modeling tasks. The complexity is also discussed to assess the efficiency of our proposed algorithms.

In order to perfectly meet the needs of business leaders, decision-makers have resorted to the integration of external sources (such as Linked Open Data) in the decision-making system in order to enrich their existing data warehouses with new concepts contributing to bring added value to their organizations, enhance its productivity and retain its customers. However, the traditional data warehouse environment is not suitable to support external Big Data. To deal with this new challenge, several researches are oriented towards the direct conversion of classical relational data warehouse to a columnar NoSQL data warehouse, whereas the existing advanced works based on clustering algorithms are very limited and have several shortcomings. In this context, our paper proposes a new solution that conceives an optimized columnar data warehouse based on CLARANS clustering algorithm that has proven its effectiveness in generating optimal column families. Experimental results improve the validity of our system by performing a detailed comparative study between the existing advanced approaches and our proposed optimized method.
