Northwest Pacific Marine Reservoir Correction Estimated from Annually Banded Coral from Ishigaki Island, Southern Japan

Abstract: ABSTRACT. We assessed marine reservoir age R(t) for the costal area of the northwest Pacific using radiocarbon measurements of the annually banded coral core (Porites sp) collected on Ishigaki Island in southern Japan. Reservoir age R(t) during the early 1900s at the Pacific coast of Ishigaki Island ranged between 290 and 455 14 C yr, with a weighted mean of 355 ± 25 14 C yr (n=5, ±1 σ). The regional-specific ∆R, defined as 14 C age difference of regional and world ocean surface layer, was 35 ± 25 14 C yr (n=5… Show more

“…The Kuroshio Current provides water that is well-mixed with the atmosphere, resulting in low ΔR values . Hideshima et al (2001) and Yoneda et al (2007) report values ranging between 135 ± 48 and -15 ± 64 years for the Ryukyu Islands, southwest of Kyushu. On coastlines facing the Nankai Trough, Nakamura et al (2007) report ΔR values of -11 ± 103 years from Yoshigo and -201 ± 77 years from Kuzubasama, while Yoneda et al (2000) report a ΔR value of -7 ± 0 years for the Kii Peninsula.…”

“…We submitted 0.5 g of carbonate mud to each date. Calibrated age ranges were calculated according to Method A of Stuiver et al (1998), after applying a local correction for the northwestern Pacific of 355 years (ΔR =35± 25) (Hideshima et al, 2001). …”

“…In the conversion, we adopted a ∆R = 35 25 ± years (the local difference in reservoir age from 400 years in the southern Okinawa Trough) as determined from annually banded corals of Ishigaki Island (Hideshima et al 2001). The calibrated ages were then converted into thousand years BP (ka before AD1950) ( Table 2).…”
