North Atlantic white shrimp Litopenaeus setiferus (Decapoda: Penaeidae) as an aquaculture target species for farming: a review

Abstract: Litopenaeus setiferus has been described as an economically important native species ranging from the north Atlantic along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico to Florida. Its reproduction has been studied in captivity, as well as some aspects of its nutritional physiology, diseases and adaptation to various environments, including nurseries. In terms of growth, L. setiferus has been compared with L. vannamei for its performance in ponds. As a native species, L. setiferus benefits local fisheries and is also used a… Show more

“…The culture of white shrimp, Litopenaeus setiferus , has been considered an alternative species to Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei , for the shrimp industry since the 1980s (Valenzuela‐Jiménez et al, 2020). Despite acceptable growing rates (0.75 g/week and harvest yield 7.9 ton/ha), the absence of commercial postlarvae supply did not allow the development of the L. setiferus culture (Valenzuela‐Jiménez et al, 2020).…”

Despite acceptable growing rates (0.75 g/week and harvest yield 7.9 ton/ha), the absence of commercial postlarvae supply did not allow the development of the L. setiferus culture (Valenzuela‐Jiménez et al, 2020). The cause of this lack of postlarvae is the reproductive problems that wild males of this species develop once they are kept in captivity, a topic that has been approached by several studies (Alfaro‐Montoya, 2010; Pascual et al, 1998; Sánchez et al, 2001).…”
