Normative values in esophageal high‐resolution manometry

Abstract: In this review, we describe the presently available HRM systems, the currently known normative thresholds and the factors that influence them, and assess the use of these thresholds. Numerous factors including the type of HRM system, demographic factors, catheter diameter, body position during testing, consistency of bolus swallows, and esophageal length have an influence on the normative data. It would thus be ideal to have different sets of normal values for each of these factors, yet at the moment the amoun… Show more

“…The device utilized in the investigational work for the development of the CC was the apparatus designed by Sierra Scientific ( currently marketed by Medtronic, UK). Hence, the published normal values and discriminant characteristics of these metrics pertain to studies using Sierra devices and are different for studies using other equipment 12 . This consideration is especially relevant with respect to measuring the completeness of oesophagogastric junction (EGJ) relaxation, key to the diagnosis of achalasia.…”

“…In the sitting position the proportion of abnormal contractions increase (2,10,12) , the distal contraction integral and the amplitude of contractions decrease (4,6,11,12) . It could be, at least in part, the explanation for the absence of difference between men and women.…”

“…HRM is a modern method for esophageal motility evaluation, however the examination performed in different countries did not found the same results (4) . The type of HRM system, catheter diameter, demographic factors, body position during the test, consistency of the bolus swallowed and esophageal length have influence on the results of the examination (10) .…”
