Normative Interfaces: Affordances, Gender, and Race in Facebook

Abstract: With each new technological advancement comes a declaration of some "great social equalizer" (boyd, 2014). When the Internet was first entering households, a common belief was that its integration would bring a cultural and social shift. These sentiments were guided by the idea that virtual communities allowed users to leave their bodies behind; users met new people and experimented with their identities (Rheingold, 1996; Turkle, 1995). Prejudices were assumed to soon be a thing of the past-race, gender, and p… Show more

“…The problem of the dominant White people in ads is its power of invisibilizing the other races. White hegemonic is real according to Hall (1996), specifically among luxury fashion brand ads (Cirucci, 2017;Goldberg, 2009;Thomas et al, 2018). Whiteness typifies a location of social and economic privilege, while the other races -Black, Hispanic, and Asian-represent a position of marginalization (Wilkes, 2015).…”

“…Furthermore, users are only able to customize their gender options after the sign-up process within the "About" portion of their profile. In focus group study of 45 college aged participants, just half of the Facebook users were familiar with additional gender options available and only one changed her gender display (from female to cisfemale) [37]. Gender also influences which content is automatically presented, including targeted advertising [38].…”

“…In contrast, new users are not required to select race or ethnic categories to sign up for Facebook accounts, nor are these selections visible to outside viewers unless the user chooses to make that information publicly available. This lack of options regarding race and ethnicity provides further insight into Facebook designer and programmer assumptions, where explicit racial and ethnic categories are deemed inessential [39]. Facebook's Non-Discrimination Policy states, "Ads must not discriminate against people based on personal attributes such as race, ethnicity, color, national origin, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, family status, disability, medical or genetic condition" (Facebook, n.d.-b).…”

“…This theory is intriguing when considering an online platform such as Reddit, which is transient in nature and nonphysical, because the relationship between technology and user becomes multifaceted. Cirucci (2017) outlines the origin of affordance theory by Gaver, citing the separation between animal and artifact. In this sense, the animal can choose how to use the artifact, but the artifact may have nuances that suggest a socially appropriate use of the artifact, which can vary by animal and culture.…”

“…In the case of Reddit, information (decoding) is provided for an audience, where both of these roles can produce or embody knowledge from both user and designer perspectives. 4 Cirucci (2017) contributes to the discussion of cohesive affordance theory by describing the actual functions that serve as potential affordances within the online platform Facebook, specifically describing the choices people must make to use the platform. In her article, Cirucci (2017) notes that simply having to choose a binary gender is an affordance of the digital technology that dictates how the platform could be used.…”
