Normative and nonnormative pattern in achievement of developmental tasks: Sibling relationship quality and life satisfaction during emerging adulthood

Abstract: The aims of the present study were to investigate whether twins and siblings close in age (1) present a normative pattern in the achievement of residential, working, and economic autonomy (the older sibling assumes a more adult role earlier than the younger, or twins assume an adult role at the same time); (2) differ in sibling relationship quality; and whether the normativity is linked (3) to the quality of sibling relationship and (4) to life satisfaction. “…It might be easier for siblings who are closer in age to see their relationship improve, as they perceive commonalities in their tasks or responsibilities during the transition to adulthood. Along these lines, twins were found to report higher levels of warmth in their relationship than were siblings who were not twins (Ponti & Smorti, 2020).…”

“…As understandings of coresidence vary across cultures and over time (cf. Hardie & Seltzer, 2016;Li & Hung, 2019;Ponti & Smorti, 2020) and given our focus on contemporary American and Canadian representations in the postrecession period, we included only films released between January 1, 2010 and January 1, 2021 that were set in the United States or Canada. Film searches were undertaken in January of 2021 and The King of Staten Island (Apatow, 2020) was the only included film released during the COVID-19 pandemic.…”

“…Beyond a greater diversity of samples, other areas need more research. Although patterns of sibling relationship quality have been examined across adolescence and through young adulthood, more longitudinal work is needed to expand to the later ages of young adulthood and include a focus on a variety of life transitions (Ponti & Smorti, 2020). Additionally, more research is needed on links between sibling relationships and peer relationships.…”

“…The order of transitions may also be important. When older siblings go through normative transitions before younger siblings, relationship quality may be higher (Ponti & Smorti, 2020).…”
