Normalization of ventral tegmental area structure following acupuncture in a rat model of heroin relapse

Abstract: Drugs can cause obvious damage to the brain. To verify the relationship between acupuncture, neurotrophic factor expression and brain cell structural changes, this study established a rat model of heroin relapse using intramuscular injection of increasing amounts of heroin. During the detoxification period, rat models received acupuncture at Baihui (DU20) and Dazhui (DU14). Electron microscopy demonstrated that the structure of the ventral tegmental area in heroin relapse rats gradually became normalized after… Show more

“…According to the theory of TCM, the synergistic and complementary effects of different acupoints compatibility supposedly have an advantage in clinical practice to enhance the curative efficacy and reduce the side effects ( 39 ). In clinical practice, GV20 and GV14 are usually used in combination with each other ( 40 ). Previous studies demonstrated that GV20 and GV14 are optimized acupoints combinations for neuropsychiatric disorders, which could improve the cerebral blood circulation, enhance memory, and improve antidepressant activity, playing a key role in brain protection ( 41 , 42 ).…”

“…Transcutaneous electric acupoint stimulation was a possible adjunctive treatment to pharmacological treatments for heroin detoxification [ 62 ]. Acupuncture at Dazhui (GV14) and Baihui (DU20) prevented brain cell apoptosis in heroin-readdicted rats, normalized neuronal ultrastructure in the ventral tegmental area of heroin relapse rats, and protected nerve cells against injury in heroin relapse rats [ 32 , 88 ].…”
