In this study, we examined the relation between physiological stress-reactivity and temperamental fearfulness in 162 preschool-aged children. Both the autonomic and neuroendocrine arms of the mammalian stress system were examined. Larger stress responses were defined as greater sympathetic activation, parasympathetic withdrawal and cortisol increases to stressor tasks. Fearful temperament was examined using parent report and behavior in response to fear-evocative laboratory tasks. There was little evidence that larger sympathetic activation or parasympathetic withdrawal was associated with fearful temperament. Greater cortisol reactivity, however, was associated with fearful temperament. Additional analyses examined those children who were consistently fearful across all measures, and the results remained largely the same. However, there was some suggestion that consistently fearful compared to non-fearful children might be more likely to exhibit sympathetic activation to the fear-evocative stimuli. These findings provide support for the argument that fearful temperament is associated with greater stress reactivity in young children. Nonetheless the size of the associations was small and future studies will need to determine whether reactivity of stress-sensitive physiological systems contributes to the development of individual differences in fearful temperament or merely reflects these differences. This interest reflects an enhanced understanding of the neurobiology of both conditioned (LeDoux & Phelps, 2000) and unconditioned fear (Davis, Walker, & Lee, 1997) and belief that the distributed neural systems underlying acute expressions of fear also support more stable, temperamental variations in fearfulness (Rothbart, 1989). The distributed neural circuits that orchestrate fear behavior have outflows to both arms of the mammalian stress system (Charmandari, Tsigos, & Chrousos, 2005). Abstractand heart rate, are presented. Greater heart rate (β avg = −0.60, ), pubertal maturation (β avg = −0.11, ), later ECG recording times (β avg = −0.19, ), and higher diastolic blood pressure (β avg = −0.11, ) were significantly associated with reduced HRV in 10-year-old children. The normative HRV values permit clinicians to monitor, describe, and establish pediatric nosologies in primary care and research settings, which may improve treatment of diseases associated with HRV in children. By better understanding existing values, the practical applicability of HRV among clinicians will be enhanced. Lastly, developmental (e.g., puberty) and procedural (e.g., recording time) factors were identified that will improve recording procedures and interpretation of results.

Cardiac Autonomic Hypofunction in Preschool Children with Short Nocturnal Sleep

Preschool children with sleep deficit may suffer from autonomic symptoms or hypotension. Heart rate variability, reflecting cardiac parasympathetic and sympathetic activities, and blood pressure were assessed to clarify the effects of nocturnal sleep duration on cardiac autonomic function in 134 preschool children aged 5 and 6 years. Parents reported their children's typical bedtimes and wake times for weekdays. In the children, the mean nocturnal sleep duration (± standard deviation) was 575 ± 42 min. The parasympathetic and sympathetic activities and systolic blood pressure (SBP) were significantly lower in the 80 children with short sleep (nocturnal sleep duration < 10 hrs) than in the 54 children with long sleep ( 10 hrs). Only the SBP was positively correlated with nocturnal sleep duration in the children ( p < 0.001); also, short nocturnal sleep duration was significantly related to hypotension (SBP < 100 mmHg), as judged by multiple logistic regression analysis. Among the children, inverse correlations were seen between the parasympathetic activity and SBP and between the sympathetic activity and diastolic blood pressure ( p < 0.05). These findings indicate that shortening of nocturnal sleep is associated with cardiac autonomic hypofunction and low SBP in preschool children.
