Normal Polysomnographic Values for Children and Adolescents

Abstract: Although polysomnography is routinely performed to evaluate children and adolescents with sleep-disordered breathing, normal polysomnographic values for the pediatric age group have not yet been established. We therefore performed overnight polysomnography in 50 normal children and adolescents (mean age 9.7 +/- 4.6 SD yr, range 1.1 to 17.4 yr). Of the children 56% were male. Chest wall motion, ECG, oronasal airflow, end-tidal PCO2 (PETCO2), arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2), and electrooculogram were monitored… Show more

“…In brief, sleep staging was assessed using standard criteria (31). The obstructive AHI was defined as the number of apneas and hypopneas per hour of total sleep time, and obstructive apnea was defined as the absence of airflow with continued chest wall and abdominal movement for a duration of at least two breaths (32,33). Hypopneas were defined as a decrease in nasal flow of 50% or more with a corresponding decrease in Sp O 2 of 4% or more and/or arousal (32).…”

“…Obstructive sleep apnea for this study was defined as an AHI 1 event/hr. 7,8,16,17 The central apnea index (CAI) was defined as the number of central apneas per hour of sleep. Oximetry artifacts in the pulse waveform tracing were discarded manually following visual inspection of traces, and oxygen desaturation index (ODI) was defined as the number of desaturations (drop in SaO 2 4% of baseline value) per hour of sleep.…”

“…This method was previously validated and found to have overall agreement with conventional polysomnography for a sleep/wakefulness discrimination of 94%. 16 Total sleep time (TST) was quantitated, and respiratory parameters were expressed as a percentage of TST.…”
