Normal-Coordinate Analysis of Poly(vinyl chloride) and Deuterated Analogs

Abstract: :Normal-vibration frequencies of the extended syndiotatic structure of poly(vinyl chloride) and deuterated analogs (a-d1. and d3) were calculated with the modified Urey-Bradley force field. The results were utilized to analyze the infrared spectra of these polymers and detailed assignments were given to most of the crystalline bands.

“…Such spectra are depicted in Figure for the specimens whose reflectance spectra were given in Figure . It is evident that the spectral regions 580−720, 900−1000, 1220−1285, and 1300−1350 cm -1 are most sensitive to polarization of the incident radiation, in agreement with previous transmission studies of PVC thin films. Bands in these regions have been assigned to C−Cl stretching, CH 2 rocking, CH 2 bending, and CH 2 wagging modes, respectively. , In the present investigation the 580−720 cm -1 C−Cl stretching region is being utilized, which can be deconvoluted into eight or 10 Lorentzian peaks according to previous infrared 67,68,70 and Raman , studies. Table lists the position of the infrared peaks found in previous works, with some of the proposed assignments.…”

“…Further the chlorine involving force constants were transferred from poly vinylidene chloride22 because of the localized nature of modes related to chlorine atom. The accuracy was further judged by examining the effectiveness of force constants in other chlorine containing molecules e.g., poly vinyl chloride 23. The set of force constants so composed was later refined to give the “best fit” to the observed spectra.…”
