“…The results of investigations of the effect of exogenous stimulation by TSH and the influence of Interferon-ct-2b are in good accordance with earlier own results (Wenisch, 1987) and the data of other authors (Smeds, 1989;Dralle, 1989). After application of pooled serum of patients with Graves' disease, a slight decrease of mean carcinoma transplant sizes was found in one series.…”

“…The investigation of growth stimulation in differentiated carcinomas was found to be much more difficult (Wenisch, 1987). In the literature, no growth stimulating effect could be demonstrated in papillary thyroid carcinoma using endogenous TSH-stimulation up to 4 months after transplantation (Smeds et al, 1989;Dralle, 1989 also showed no growth enhancement after exogenous TSH-stimulation in three different well differentiated carcinomas xenografted into nude mice (Wenisch, 1987). Aim of the following study was, to compare the effect of TSH, stimulating autoantibodies and cytokines in xenografted papillary thyroid cancers with compared to normal human thyroid tissues.…”

“…The serum TSAb found in the latter disease, i.e., antibodies against the TSH receptor, stimulate predominantly the cAMP cascade (236). TSH and TSAb massively stimulate DNA synthesis in nonneoplastic human thyroid tissues xenotransplanted in nude mice (237). In contrast, TSH deficiency or TSH receptorinactivating mutations are accompanied by thyroid hypotrophy (238,239).…”

“…These conclusions have been validated in transgenic mice in vivo , in which the forced thyrocyte expression of the adenosine A2 receptor ( 28 ), activated Gsα ( 29 ), or cholera toxin ( 30 ), all constitutively activating adenylate cyclase, also leads to hyperthyroidism and goiter. Finally, the mitogenic action of TSH was also demonstrated in xenotransplants of human thyroid tissue in mice ( 31 , 32 ).…”
