Norbornyl benzocyclobutene ladder polymers: Conformation and microporosity

Abstract: Shape-persistent contorted ladder polymers are an intriguing and unusual class of polymers. Using catalytic arene-norbornene annulation (CANAL) polymerization and with norbornadiene and dibromoarenes as monomers, we synthesized a series of ladder polymers with fused norbornyl benzocyclobutene backbones and varied conformations. A diaryl spiro-orthocarbonate monomer was used to reorient the ladder backbone perpendicularly to induce three-dimensional kinks, and a p-dibromo-xylene comonomer was used to statistica… Show more

“…The spirocyclic component was crucial in increasing the polymer free volume, resulting in a BET surface area of 850 m 2 g −1 and selective gas permeability . Recently, Xia and co‐workers synthesized norbornyl benzocyclobutene ladder polymers from norbornadiene and dibromoarenes via catalytic arene‐norbornene annulation . The microporosity of these polymers was evidenced by BET surface areas of up to 720 m 2 g −1 .…”

“…Maleimide-containing copolymers are well-known to exhibit high glass transition temperatures, 44 excellent thermal stability, 45 and constrained torsional freedom 46 due to the presence of these intrachain rings, although not to the extent of fully ladder-type polymers like DNA. 47 Nevertheless, this enhanced rigidity likely limits the conformational freedom of polyelectrolyte chains upon association, leading to higher stiffness upon external stress at the macroscopic level. 48…”
