As international sport exchanges between China and other countries are becoming more frequent, how to improve the English writing of sport students turns more important. In order to improve Chinese sport major students' English writing competence with modern techniques, written corrective feedback, mobile-assisted language learning utilization, and syntactic competence were selected in this study as research variables to analyze their important role in English writing teaching and their interrelationships. Descriptive research was used in this study.Totally 400 participants were required to complete a comprehensive questionnaire. They are four grades sport major students from three different levels of Chinese universities containing sport majors. The findings indicated that most respondents agreed with all the subscales under the variables of written corrective feedback, mobile-assisted language learning utilization, and syntactic competence. Although there was no significant difference on above three variables when grouped according to demographic variables, the three variables were highly significantly correlated with each other. By stressing the role of written corrective feedback and mobileassisted language learning utilization in cultivating sport major students' syntactic competence, a program was proposed to enhance the English writing competence of Chinese sport majors in universities, focusing on the lowest indicator in each subdomain. It also provided necessary guidance for educators, administrators and enterprises to design more suitable English writing course for sport majors with modern techniques.

The high quality of academic writing is highly influenced by the sufficient use of academic phrases. This research examined the students with English major backgrounds in both English education and English literature and found their difficult recourses. This research developed an academic phrase test and adopted a questionnaire on students’ perception on the source of academic phrase difficulties. There were 58 respondents from English majors with 49 from English education and 9 from English literature. The result of the test indicated that the student’s ability in academic phrases needs to be improved. The students perceived those unfamiliar words usage, the absence of the syllabi, insufficient teaching, and less experience in using them are the source of difficulties. Therefore, it can be said that academic phraseology should be included in the English student’s curriculum to solve the student’s issues. By doing this students’ exposure to academic phrases can be also increased so they will have more experience dealing with the phrases and can resolve their unfamiliarity with the words used in academic phrases. The findings of this study suggest that students in the English background majors should be assisted with academic phrases lessons to improve their academic writing in general and academic phrase usage in particular.

Achieving an acceptable degree of proficiency in any language is no doubt threatened by the daunting task of mastering a bulk of new vocabulary items. Although incidental reading is often considered an invaluable source of vocabulary learning, it seems to be such a slow and error-prone process that it needs to be supplemented with explicit instruction. In order to design and assess practical activities for vocabulary learning and retention, researchers have presented several techniques and models, from which the Involvement Load Hypothesis appears to be the most popular and of widespread use by ELT practitioners. The current paper presents a detailed criticism of the Hypothesis, arguing that it is unclear in identifying the model components, making the determination and measurement of the involvement load of learning tasks rather tricky. Therefore, the current paper suggests an alternative model, namely the Cognitive Load Framework, which is claimed to be more clearly operationalized, more conveniently practicable, and more easily measurable.
