NORA moving forward: Developing an oyster restoration network in Europe to support the Berlin Oyster Recommendation

Abstract: The Native Oyster Restoration Alliance (NORA) supports the protection and ecological restoration of the native European oyster, Ostrea edulis, and its habitat across its current and historical biogeographical range. NORA works to overcome barriers to the conservation, restoration, and recovery of the European oyster by providing a platform for the NORA community to collaborate and participate in knowledge exchange. NORA seeks to support responsible restoration practice, in compliance with biosecurity and susta… Show more

“…This is like worldwide examples of oyster restoration, leading to both ecosystem rehabilitation: direct economic benefits and spillover effects on fin-fisheries (Gilby et al, 2018). It is notable that such attempts are now being scaled-up to meaningful and effective levels (Pogoda et al, 2020).…”

“…Further challenges include the choice of adult broodstock oysters. The implementation of selection programmes focusing on strains tolerant to specific diseases and adapted to sitespecific environments on the one hand, and preserving a high genetic diversity of restored O. edulis populations on the other hand is of major importance (Pogoda et al 2020;zu Ermgassen et al 2020a).…”

“…There is consequently substantial international interest in restoring populations throughout the former range to recover ecological function [ 13 , 19 – 22 ], with currently 19 O . edulis restoration projects in Europe collaborating under the umbrella of the Native Oyster Restoration Alliance (NORA) [ 21 , 22 ]. In many cases, restoration also requires the recreation of lost shell habitat with an opaque understanding of the exact former locations [ 20 ].…”
