Commission VII, WG VII/2 KEY WORDS: Differential SAR Interferometry, Small BAseline Subset, TerraSAR-X, Deformation, Monitoring ABSTRACT:As result of the Turkey's economic growth and heavy migration processes from rural areas, Istanbul has experienced a high urbanization rate, with severe impacts on the environment in terms of natural resources pressure, land-cover changes and uncontrolled sprawl. As a consequence, the city became extremely vulnerable to natural and man-made hazards, inducing ground deformation phenomena that threaten buildings and infrastructures and often cause significant socio-economic losses. Therefore, the detection and monitoring of such deformation patterns is of primary importance for hazard and risk assessment as well as for the design and implementation of effective mitigation strategies. Aim of this work is to analyze the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of deformations affecting the Istanbul metropolitan area, by exploiting advanced Differential SAR Interferometry (DInSAR) techniques. In particular, we apply the Small BAseline Subset (SBAS) approach to a dataset of 43 TerraSAR-X images acquired, between November 2010 and June 2012, along descending orbits with an 11-day revisit time and a 3 m x 3 m spatial resolution. The SBAS processing allowed us to remotely detect and monitor subsidence patterns over all the urban area as well as to provide detailed information at the scale of the single building. Such SBAS measurements, effectively integrated with ground-based monitoring data and thematic maps, allows to explore the relationship between the detected deformation phenomena and urbanization, contributing to improve the urban planning and management.

ABSTRACT:Ground subsidence is one of the key factors causing damages to transportation facilities, e.g., transportation network (TN) consists of highways and railways. For better exploration of TN subsidence, we propose to use the high resolution TerraSAR-X (TSX) persistent scatterer interferometry (PSI) approach to extract regional scale (RS) subsidence related to the TN. The primary procedures involve interferometric pair selection, interferogram generation, persistent scatterer (PS) detection, PS networking, phase parameterization and subsidence estimation. Xiqing district of southwest Tianjin (China) is selected as the study area, in which multiple highways and one railway line are located. 15 TSX images collected over this area between March, 2009 and June, 2010 are utilized to extract subsidence by the TSX PSI approach. The subsidence rate (SR) map shows that remarkably uneven subsidence occurs along and around the TN, and the SR ranges between -69 and -1.3 mm/yr. For validation purpose, the SR of the TN derived by PSI is compared with leveling data collected for the benchmarks deployed along the selected highways. The mean and root mean square error (RMSE) of discrepancies between two data sets are 0.1 and ±3.2 mm/yr, respectively. The numerical analysis indicates that the high resolution TSX PSI is able to reveal comprehensive and detailed subsidence related to the TN with a millimeter level accuracy.

We estimated recent surface displacements around Bangkok by means of persistent scatterer interferometry with ALOS/PALSAR images acquired from November 2007 to December 2010. Land subsidence due to excessive groundwater pumping has been reported in this region. However, we detected ground surface uplift around the mega-city, along with seasonal surface displacement, with high spatial resolution. We then discriminated long-term natural rebound and seasonal displacement by fitting exponential and sinusoidal functions to displacement time-series, and mapped their spatial distributions. This mapping allowed us to infer that the second and third shallowest aquifers are laterally continuous, whereas the shallowest aquifer has lateral discontinuities. The temporal decay rate of the long-term rebound might reflect spatial changes of the Chao Phraya River watershed or the magnitude of the preceding groundwater extraction. We demonstrated that our method of decomposing the displacement time series into different spatial and temporal patterns is useful for understanding aquifer connectivity and the elastic response pattern in an aquifer system.
