Nontoxic organic solvents identified using ana prioriapproach with Hansen solubility parameters

Abstract: Nontoxicities of organic solvents were predicted using Hansen solubility parameters and various truly nontoxic solvents were identified according to the prediction. The nontoxicity of solvents originates from their exhibition of poor solubility or low diffusivity toward cell constituents and good stability against hydrolytic degradation.

“…The HSP is one of indicators for molecular interactions. It is an effective tool to predict and/or examine the compatibility (e.g., dispersibility, solubility, and wettability) of two different materials. ,− The HSP consists of three terms that originate from corresponding molecular interactions: δ D (London dispersion term), δ P (polar term), and δ H (hydrogen bonding term). The compatibility of two different materials (with respective HSPs of [δ D 1 , δ P 1 , δ H 1 ] and [δ D 2 , δ P 2 , δ H 2 ]) can be estimated by the HSP distance R a , which is defined as …”

“…However, the selection method of the solvents for liquid exfoliation has been based on trial and error; therefore, there are few rigorous reports that address the concrete solvent characteristics. The proposed study employs the Hansen solubility parameters (HSP) for evaluating the dispersibility of GeH.…”

“…In previous work, the similarity of HSP between the siloxane substances with methyl side chains and fluoroalkyl substances was found during exploration of nontoxic organic solvents through HSP analysis. 26 These siloxanes should have omniphobicity similar to that of fluoroalkyl substances, which would support the reported hydrophobicity of siloxanes. 12−17 In this study, we determined the HSP of OMS using the Hansen sphere method 27 through dissolution tests in organic solvents.…”

“…From the database, nonfluorinated substances with HSP located close to fluoroalkyl substances and thus inferred to possess omniphobicity can be found easily. In previous work, the similarity of HSP between the siloxane substances with methyl side chains and fluoroalkyl substances was found during exploration of nontoxic organic solvents through HSP analysis . These siloxanes should have omniphobicity similar to that of fluoroalkyl substances, which would support the reported hydrophobicity of siloxanes. …”
