Nontoxic Metal-Free Visible Light-Responsive Carbon Nitride Quantum Dots Cause Oxidative Stress and Cancer-Specific Membrane Damage

Abstract: Graphitic carbon nitride (also known as g-CN or g-C3N4) has the intrinsic ability to generate electron–hole pairs under visible light illumination, resulting in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). We report g-CN quantum dots (g-CNQDs) as a standalone photodynamic transducer for imparting significant oxidative stress in glioma cells, manifested by the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential. With an optimized treatment time, visible light source, and exposure window, the photodynamic treatment wit… Show more

“…These observations were well supported by the preferential uptake of Au NCs by cancer cells compared to normal cells (Figure C) and eventual generation of significant intracellular ROS (Figure D), leading to exclusive activation of programmed cell death (Figure E). Prior reports have linked oxidative stress and apoptosis via endoplasmic reticulum dysfunction and a decrease in the mitochondrial membrane potential leading to apoptosis. , The observed cancer-specific oxidative stress agrees with previous reports on H 2 O 2 -mediated toxicity of copper-chelated d -penicillamine against breast cancer and leukemic cells. , …”

“…In modern society, a crowd of dangerous hazards irreversibly harm human health even at extremely low levels of exposure, especially heavy metal ions and viruses. [444,465,466] Therefore, a sensitive, real-time, and rapid detection of these viruses and toxic ions has become urgent to protect human health from unintentional exposure to these hazards. Using metal-free materials to detect their concentration is appropriate since it does not induce any secondary contamination to tested samples.…”
