Nonsteroidal Antiinflammatory Drugs and Aspirin—Analyzing the Scores

Abstract: We reviewed 103 controlled clinical trials that compared the antiarthritic efficacy and tolerance of previously and currently marketed nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and aspirin. Of 52 studies, 35 had data sufficient to calculate an NSAID efficacy index (the ratio of mean improvement in NSAID-treated patients to that in aspirin-treated patients) based on subjective and/or objective criteria. The mean indexes (obtained from all studies from which an index could be calculated) indicated no statisti… Show more

“…The publication was based entirely on CV concerns with NSAIDs and on the very poorly justified opinion that all c2sNSAIDs posed a greater CV risk than nsNSAIDs. In fact, relative to its GI toxicity, aspirin is a remarkably ineffective analgesic when used in analgesic (as opposed to CV) doses [37]. The authors of this AHA paper further failed to realize the rather significant morbidity of opioids.…”

“…Introduction. -Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) represent a therapeutic class that displays remarkable similarities in therapeutic actions and side effects, but is markedly heterogenous in structural terms [l] [2]. A number of NSAIDs bear an acidic function and can be classified as salicylic acids (e.g.…”
