Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug Use Is a Significant Cause of Peptic Ulcer Disease in a Tertiary Hospital in Singapore: A Prospective Study

Abstract: H. pylori negative peptic ulcer makes up a significant proportion of peptic ulcer in Singapore. Most of these ulcers were related to NSAID use. Serum thromboxane profile suggested surreptitious NSAID use in many of the non-H. pylori and apparently non-NSAID patients.

“…This may have been because of increased use of NSAIDs among the elderly, despite the eradication of H. pylori 19,20. NSAIDs related ulcers are known to be prevalent among elderly individuals with a co-morbid illness, who are known to be more prone to gastric ulcers than duodenal ulcers, which have a greater tendency to bleed than H. pylori ulcers 21. The present study also shows that the average age of peptic ulcer patients has increased.…”

“…One of the study showed that a high prevalence of occult non steroid antiinflammatory drug usages was found in H. pylori negative (PUD) patients which was based on elevated serum thromboxane. [16] In our study, 50% patients had non H. pylori PUD which might be the NSAID usages but we were not able to assess the association between NSAID and non H. pylori PUD because of incomplete data. In the present study, the commonest histopathological finding was gastritis (n = 158, 61.7%).…”
