Nonshared Environment

Abstract: Findings from decades of research show that the environmental experiences of individuals reared in the same home can make them different from one another as well as similar. This is true for a wide range of individual characteristics and personal relationships. The phenomenon in which environmental influences cause family members to differ from one another is known in the behavioral genetic literature as nonshared environment.

“…When we consider the findings of the husband's reports of marital quality linked with his wife's reports of social support and mental health by nonshared environmental influences, the husband is strongly implicated as the source of the nonshared environmental influences on his wife's mental health. Analyses conducted by other members of the Twin Moms team using MZ difference scores offer support for this explanation (Towers, 2003)…”

“…In addition to including measurement error and short-term effects, the nonshared environmental influences consist of enduring factors that make each twin different. Other researchers from the Twin Moms project have made a strong case for the influence of spouses explaining a majority of the nonshared environmental variance in marital quality (Spotts, Neiderhiser, Ganiban, et al, 2004; Spotts, Pedersen, et al, 2005; Towers, 2003). Considering that the spouses of MZ twins are not very similar to each other (Lykken & Tellegen, 1993), spouses are likely to be a large source of differential experience for the twins.…”
