NonScarring Diffuse Hair Loss in Women: a Clinico‐Etiological Study from tertiary care center in North‐West India

Abstract: Nonscarring DHL is a multifactorial condition with highest incidence in 21- to 40-year age group. Serum ferritin, serum vitamin B12, and D3 levels seem to have a contributing role in the pathogenesis of hair loss, and their supplementation may be needed for a faster regrowth of hair in all cases of hair loss irrespective of the pattern.

“…A study again performed in female patients with diffuse hair loss reported low hemoglobin level in 57% patients, vitamin B12 deficiency in 76% cases and vitamin D3 < 30 ng/mL in 81% cases. Subclinical hypothyroidism was present in 11% of cases (9). These outcomes are very different from ours and other studies concerning vitamin B12 levels.…”

“…One of the skin manifestations of hypothyroidism is the changes that occur in the hair (dry, thin, and shedding hair) (12). Studies support the relationship between thyroid dysfunction and diffuse-type hair loss, although its mechanism remains to be fully understood (13) Our study had some limitations. The generalizability of the findings obtained is controversial since the absence of a control group and the retrospective design of the study.…”

“…Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a downstream effect of long term iron deficiency. 2 Several uncontrolled studies with small test populations have demonstrated high rates of anemia amongst TE patients, 6 however a major controlled study found no difference in hemoglobin levels in patients with chronic TE and the control populations. 5 It is unclear whether population prevalence estimates of IDA are any different from controlled studies of subjects with TE.…”
