Nonprescription Product Use Among Geriatric Outpatients

Abstract

ÖzAmaç: Yaşlı bireylerde bitkisel, raf üstü satılan ürünler ve vitaminleri içeren ve reçetesiz kullanılan ilaç ve tıbbi ürünler sık kullanılmaktadır. Bu çalışma ile yaşlılarda reçetesiz kullanılan ürünlerin kullanım sıklığını ve ilişkili olabilecek faktörleri değerlendirmeyi amaçladık. Materyal ve Metot: Geriatri polikliniğine başvuran 60 yaş ve üzeri 388 hasta yüz-yüze yöntemle anket formu kullanılarak değerlendirildi. Ayrıca hastaların tüm demografik özellikleri kayıt edildi. Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılan hastaların ortalama yaşı 73,85±7,36 (yaş aralığı 60-96; kadınların oranı %62,11). Tüm katılımcılar arasında reçetesiz ürün kullanım sıklığı %20,62 idi (n=80). Kadınların reçetesiz ürün kullanım sıklığı, erkeklerden daha fazlaydı (sırasıyla %72,50, %27,50, p=0,032). Reçetesiz ürün kullanımı ile medeni durum dışında yaş, eğitim, gelir düzeyi, çocuk sayısı, yaşanılan bölge ve sosyal güvence olup olmaması arasında anlamlı fark bulunamadı. Çalışmaya katılanlardan 186 yaşlıda (%47,68) polifarmasi (≥5 ilaç kullanımı) mevcuttu. En az 1 kronik hastalığı olan yaşlı oranı %79,12 (n=307) bulundu. Çalışmaya katılanların önemli bir bölümü (%62,50) reçetesiz kullandıkları ürünü doktoruna söylememişti. Sonuç: Türk yaşlılarında reçetesiz ürün kullanım sıklığı özellikle kadınlarda yüksektir. Reçetesiz ürün kullanan kişilerin çoğunluğu bitkisel veya doğal kabul edilen ürün ve kullandığı ilaçlar ile potansiyel etkileşime maruz kalmaktadır. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prevalence and associated factors of non-prescription medication and product use in the older individuals. Materials and Methods:We assessed 388 older outpatients aged 60 and over, who were admitted to our geriatric clinic using a face-to-face questionnaire form. Also, the demographic characteristics of all patients were recorded. Results: The mean age of study population was 73.85±7.36 years (range 60-96; 62.11% female). The prevalence of non-prescription product use among all participants was 20.62 % (n = 80). The prevalence of non-prescription product use was higher in women than in men (respectively 72.50%, 27.50%, p=0.032). Apart from the marital status, there was no significant difference between non-prescription product use and age, education, income level, number of children, region of residence and social insurance existence, respectively. One-hundred-and-eighty-six participants (47.68%) in the study sample reported polypharmacy. 79.12% of older patients (n=307) had at least one chronic disease. The majority of the study participants (62.50%) did not report the usage of non-prescription medicine to their own physicians.
