Nonpoint‐Source Pollutant Load Reductions Associated with Livestock Exclusion

Abstract: Cattle (Bos taurus) grazing on unimproved pastures can be a significant, yet often overlooked, source of pollutants to surface waters, especially when the cattle have unlimited access to streams in the pastures. Livestock exclusion from streams has been demonstrated to reduce sediment and possibly nutrient yield from streams draining pastures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of excluding dairy cows from, and planting trees in, a 335-m-long and 10-to 16-m-wide riparian corridor along a sma… Show more

“…This is driven by reduction of sediment, pathogen and nutrient loads (Heathwaite et al, 1998;Line et al, 2000;Reed and Carpenter, 2002;McKergow et al, 2003;Sharply et al, 2003;Young and Briggs, 2005;Cors and Tychon, 2007;Haygarth et al, 2009;Wilcock et al, 2009). As noted by Lynch et al (2001) such findings have encouraged some policymakers to assign a high priority to establishing riparian buffers.…”

“…Not surprisingly, concentration of sediment in surface runoff has been linearly related to the amount of bare ground of a given area, as exposed soil is more susceptible to soil detachment by overland flow (Hofman and Ries 1991;Elliott et al 2002;Persyn et al 2004) and erosive energy of raindrops (Young and Wiersma 1973;Morgan 1978;Kinnell 2005). As a result, bare ground in riparian areas of pastures may contribute significant sediment and phosphorus loads to surface waters during heavy rainfall events (Line et al 2000;Byers et al 2005;Butler et al 2006). Although stocking rate did not affect the proportion of bare ground within 15.2 m of pasture streams in the current study, measuring bare ground from each stream's edge likely confounded the effects of cow traffic on the proportion of bare ground with those caused by precipitation runoff and erosive energy of the stream flow (Tufekcioglu 2010).…”

“…2). This rapid response suggests that the main effect of the management changes was through the elimination of stock damage to soils on steep slopes and stream banks (Smith 1989;Line et al 2000). Pine afforestation should further enhance this reduction in erosion as the trees develop into a forest (Blashke et al 1992;Marden & Rowan 1994).…”
