Nonmelanoma skin cancer in India: Current scenario

Abstract: Incidence of skin cancers has been increasing since the last few decades worldwide. Nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the commonest variety of cutaneous malignancy. Conventional wisdom has it that the incidence of all varieties of skin cancers is lower among Indians due to the protective effects of melanin. Though national surveys and cross-country data in India are unavailable, there are indirect indications from several smaller reports that NMSCs may be on the rise in India. “…Nevertheless, a recent Indian review showed that there are indirect indications that NMSCs may be on the rise in India. [49] Unlike NMSC, the direct association with UV exposure is still under investigation for cutaneous malignant melanoma. “…1 In Asians, the BCC, which typically presents as pigmented skin lesions with a rolled pearly border and telangiectasia, 1,2 is the most common skin cancer, accounting for ∼70% of all malignant cutaneous tumors. 1,2 Although it rarely metastasizes, BCC can cause significant destruction and disfigurement by local invasion. 3 Melanocytic nevus and seborrheic keratosis (SK) are the two most common benign pigmented skin lesions that, importantly, may mimic BCC clinically.…”

“…[1] Though NMSC is uncommon in Asians, SCC is the most prevalent skin malignancy reported in India. [2] The exact incidence in India is however unreported in literature. NMSC occupies a small space in the perception of clinical dermatologists in India mainly because of the supposedly protective effects of eumelanin in the brown skin of the Indian population.…”
