Abstract. The state-of-art and key problems of carbon nanotube (CNT) based polymer composites (CNT/polymer composites) including CNT/polymer structural composites and CNT/polymer functional composites are reviewed. Based on the results reported up to now, CNTs can be an effective reinforcement for polymer matrices, and the tensile strength and elastic modulus of CNT/polymer composites can reach as high as 3600 MPa and 80 GPa, respectively. CNT/polymer composites are also promising functional composite materials with improved electrical and thermal conductivity, etc. Due to their multi-functional properties, CNT/polymer composites are expected to be used as low weight structural materials, optical devices, thermal interface materials, electric components, electromagnetic absorption materials, etc. However, the full potential of CNT/polymer composites still remains to be realized. A few key problems, such as how to prepare structurecontrollable CNTs with high purity and consistently dependable high performance, how to break up entangled or bundled CNTs and then uniformly disperse and align them within a polymer matrix, how to improve the load transfer from matrix to CNT reinforcement, etc, still exist and need to be solved in order to realize the wide applications of these advanced composites.

Due to the remarkable physical and mechanical properties of individual, perfect carbon nanotubes (CNTs), they are considered to be one of the most promising new reinforcements for structural composites. Their impressive electrical and thermal properties also suggest opportunities for multifunctional applications. In the context of inorganic matrix composites, researchers have particularly focussed on CNTs as toughening elements to overcome the intrinsic brittleness of the ceramic or glass material. Although there are now a number of studies published in the literature, these inorganic systems have received much less attention than CNT/polymer matrix composites. This paper reviews the current status of the research and development of CNT-loaded ceramic matrix composite materials. It includes a summary of the key issues related to the optimisation of CNT-based composites, with particular reference to brittle matrices and provides an overview of the processing techniques developed to 2 optimise dispersion quality, interfaces and density. The properties of the various composite systems are discussed, with an emphasis on toughness; a comprehensive comparative summary is provided, together with a discussion of the possible toughening mechanism that may operate. Lastly, a range of potential applications are discussed, concluding with a discussion of the scope for future developments in the field.3

Recently, there have been several reports integrating PB and CNT for hydrogen peroxide detection. [24][25][26] In this report, a simple procedure for the deposition of PB on the sidewalls of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) is explained. The resulting MWCNT-PB composite was used as a building block for the fabrication of multilayer structures on glassy carbon electrodes by the layer-by-layer technique. [27][28][29][30][31] Multilayer assemblies of MWCNT-PB composites were obtained by alternative dipping the electrode in separate solutions containing positively charged poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and negatively charged MWCNT-PB composites. The multi-layered film showed sensitive detection for the reduction of hydrogen peroxide. The amount of MWCNT-PB deposits can be easily controlled, and the resulting material affects the sensitivity of the detection. This approach can be applied for the construction of high-performance biosensors and biofuel cells. Experimental Chemicals and reagentsMulti-walled carbon nanotubes were purchased from Nanoport Co. Ltd. (Shenzhen, China), and were treated in a 1:3 (v:v) mixture of concentrated HNO3-H2SO4 at 50 C for 24 h. The CNT materials were then thoroughly washed with doubly distilled water. The functionalized MWCNT materials were obtained by drying in vacuum at 70 C overnight. PDDA with a molecular weight range of 200000 -350000 was purchased 2010 © The Japan Society for Analytical Chemistry † To whom correspondence should be addressed. Prussian blue (PB) was deposited on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in an aqueous solution. Multi-layer composites of the MWCNT-PB hybride material were obtained by layer-by-layer assembly with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA). The resulting {PDDA/MWCNT-PB}n multilayer films immoblized on glassy carbon electrodes showed sensitive detection for the reduction of hydrogen peroxide. A sensor based on the {PDDA/MWCNT-PB}n multilayer structure was fabricated and showed excellent sensitivity to the electrochemical reduction of hydrogen peroxide. Its response sensitivity increased with the number of the multilayers. A high response sensitivity of 0.83 mA M -1 cm -2 was obtained for a seven-layer sensor. This redox active multilayer structure offers potential applications in the development of high performance biosensors and biofuel cells.
