Nonlinear Optical Absorption Properties of Two Multisubstituted p-Dimethylaminophenylethenyl Pyridiniums

Abstract: Two multisubstituted D-pi-A type pyridinium salts, N-methyl-2,6-di[(E)-p-dimethylaminophenylethenyl]pyridinium iodide (1) and N-methyl-2,4,6-tri[(E)-p-dimethylaminophenylethenyl]pyridinium iodide (2), were synthesized with good yields by a modified method, and the structure of 1 was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The nonlinear optical absorption (NOA) properties of the two compounds in the solution state were investigated by the Z-scan technique. Compounds 1 and 2 both exhibited very strong saturated absorpti… Show more

“…The Z-scan measurements indicate that NNM exhibits negative nonlinear optical properties. It is worth noting that the value of nonlinear susceptibility (w (3) ) for NNM is larger than those of some representative third-order nonlinear optical materials [20,21].…”

“…Table 2 depicts the nonlinear parameters, nonlinear refractive index (n 2 ), change in refractive index (Dn), nonlinear absorption coefficient (b) and nonlinear susceptibility (w (3) ) of NNM using the Z-scan technique with 632.8 nm He-Ne laser. As the nonlinear refractive index of NNM has a negative sign, it results in selfdefocusing nature of the material, which is an essential property for its application in the protection of optical sensors such as night-vision devices [18].…”

“…Materials with third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) property, i.e., nonlinear refraction (NLR) and nonlinear absorption (NLA), are preferred for all optical switching and sensor protection applications [1][2][3][4][5]. For the past few years, an investigation in finding the new organic NLO materials is triggered.…”
