Nonlinear indentation of fibers

Abstract: An instrumented indentation method is established to accurately measure the local elastic-plastic material properties of a single fiber by accounting for the additional sources of compliance associated with fiber indentation. The Oliver-Pharr instrumented indentation data analysis method is compared for indentation of a standard, planar fused silica sample and in the radial direction of homogeneous, isotropic E-glass fibers of two different diameters. Compliance contributions from substrate deflection and othe… Show more

“…To prepare the fibers for indentation and subsequent tensile testing, a combination of a fiber mounting procedure for indentation that is described in detail in Ref. [25] and an end tabbing technique used for single fiber tensile testing, established in ASTM D 3379-75, 26 was used. Single fiber samples were secured over a window ($25 mm gauge length) cut out of a cardboard rectangle.…”

“…Modifications to the theory must be made if the samples violate these assumptions . Recent work on the indentation of cylindrical fibers includes modified analyses that account for sample geometry . The Supporting Information includes an analysis for determining a modified contact depth hc* for sample curvature.…”

“…where ϕ is the half-apical angle of the indenter. A full derivation of the contact height and Equation 11 is available in [ 26 ]. As shown in Figure 4c , the deviation of the correction factor to unity is about 23% and 12% for E /σ y = 10 and E /σ y = 20, respectively.…”

“…The elastic modulus of nanoindentation was calculated via the Oliver–Pharr method. We found that the contact height [ 26 ] is unsuitable to replace the contact depth for obtaining the indentation elastic modulus of microspherical materials.…”
